The List: Creative Wayfinding Signs
Just as signs help us to navigate the spaces we find ourselves in, we thought we’d help you navigate this list by dividing it into 2 sections: Interior Wayfinding Signs and Exterior Wayfinding signs
6 Interior Wayfinding Signs
1. Colours & Numbers
This colourful wayfinding sign really gets clients’ attention and helps them know where to find which department they are looking for. This sign appeals to someone who will be more likely to remember either colour codes or numbers!
2. Universal Symbols
Against the black background, the white lettering really stands out as the primary message. However, the blue symbols also pop to send the desired message without words and are balanced with the blue border below. Using a hanging sign also makes for good use of space.
3. Accessible Signage
This sign is great because, if you look closely, you’ll notice that it includes braille for the visually impaired. Also, the black lettering and border stand out among the beige background. The perforated border allowing light to shine through creates interesting detail. A clever way to help clients find the department they are looking for.
4. Simple & Safe
We love this sign! Do you know why? Because that small and simple white sign on the window might just stop someone from walking into the glass by accident… ouch!
But seriously, this sign is simple and modern and a great choice for applying on glass windows and/or doors.
5. Au Naturel
This sign also incorporates universal symbols and lettering to get the message across. This time, the lettering and graphics are made with wood (or faux wood). It looks textured and contrasts nicely against the plain white background. This type of signage would be great for a business brand known for organic products.
6. Long Lists
While maybe not as creative as the first wayfinding sign on our list, this list is useful for highlighting the services found in a large building with multiple levels and departments. This sign helps people navigate from the parking lot to their desired floor. This way, no guesswork is involved and missed appointments are eliminated.
6 exterior Wayfinding Signs
1. Floor Signs
While this sign may not include the messaging meant for your business, the concept is creative. You might want to welcome customers with a fun sign at your doorstep or add some arrows to an alternative entrance around the corner. We’ve even seen signage on the steps of staircases!
2. Light Up the night
Another idea for an exterior wayfinding sign is a pylon sign. This pylon sign is illuminated so as not to be missed when the sun goes down.
The branding elements are large and visible in the background as well.
3. Wooden Ladder
You’ve likely seen signs like this if you’ve ever been to a park or recreation center. The wood can withstand outdoor wear and the symbols actually stand out better than the lettering from far away. Nothing like a coffee symbol when you need a break and a hot soothing drink after hiking for hours. Another benefit to this sign is you can add or remove rungs to the “ladder”.
4. Monumental Signs
The next example is actually a monument sign which boldly states to visitors that they’ve arrived at their destination. This sign is large and cannot be missed when driving by. The creative element of this wayfinding sign is the brick and the logo to the left.
5. Neon Vibes
Has anyone noticed the coffee theme in this blog? People wouldn’t want to be without their coffee, right? Especially on a long drive late at night when there are 3 more hours to go.
Well, maybe you’re not a coffee drinker, but this neon sign sure brings back those retro vibes and is a fun way to get some attention.
6. Awning Directions
This sign is another clever use of space. If you need an awning to protect employees and customers from rain or snow, why not add some signage there? This donation centre used the space to direct customers to their unloading station. Another example of creative wayfinding signs.
