Outdoor Commercial Signs

There are many different types of outdoor commercial signs to choose from. Each has its own benefits and purposes. The following is a breakdown of the different kinds of outdoor commercial signs to help you make a wise choice.

Pylon Signs: Ideal for Busy Retail Areas & Large Parking Lots

Pylon signs are tall, eye-catching signs usually located near your
business entrance

Pylon signs are freestanding signs that are built right into the ground. They have a visible support structure to keep them secured.

Most pylon signs are at least 12 feet high, with some much higher, and they come in a wide variety of widths.

They are usually located away from your building, near the street and your entrance. They are often the first sign that your customers will see to direct them to your location.

You can choose to have your pylon sign illuminated or not illuminated, and you can choose either single or double sided with your message on one or both sides.

Often, pylon signs will include an electronic display section that is easy to change or update.

Monument Signs: Ideal for Areas with Sign Height Restrictions

Monument signs are shorter than pylon signs, usually at eye level

Monument signs are very similar to pylon signs except in one area - their height. A monument sign is usually no taller than about five feet tall. Its purpose is to display your message at eye level.

These more compact signs will blend in well will your landscaping, and if your area has zoning restrictions with regards to the height of your sign, a monument sign might be your best choice.

Back Lit: Ideal for Nighttime Visibility

Back lit signs can be seen better at night and in low light conditions

This type of sign has its own internal lighting system, which means that is visible both during the day at night.

You can find all sizes of back-lit lights from larger exterior ones on the front of buildings displaying your business name to smaller interior versions that highlight your products or services.

Back-lit signs are perfect for attracting customers' attention, especially in areas that have poor or lower lighting. The illumination will help your sign get noticed from a great distance away.

Illuminated Sign: Ideal for High Visibility & Energy Savings

Unlike back-lit signs, illuminated signs are only lit up at night. During the day, they use natural light. These types of signs usually use LED lights.

Banners: Ideal for Short-Term Signage

Vertically hung banners can be quite effective

Banners are an effective short-term form of signage. They are usually very big and eye-catching and can be used both indoors and outdoors.

They can be used to announce upcoming events, such as grand openings or trade shows. They are usually hung horizontally, but they can also be very noticeable if they are hung in a series of vertical displays.

They are also a great choice to use as a temporary solution until you are ready to install your permanent signage.

Channel or Individual Cut Letters: Ideal for a Modern & Professional Image

Channel letters can be made with LED lighting inside

Channel letters are individually cut letters that are usually hand-made. The letters can be made from plastic, metal, or acrylic.

They tend to cost more because of the extra work involved in making each letter, but the result is a highly modern and professional look.

You can also light up each letter by installing LED lighting inside, or if you prefer a halo effect, you can have the light shine out of the back of the letters onto your building.

Some businesses choose both front and back lighting techniques, especially if they want to have a two-coloured effect.

Reader Boards: Ideal for Churches, Schools & Public Buildings

A reader board comes with removable letters that allow you to change
your message

Reader boards are signs that have removable letters that you can take off and put up whatever message you like.

They can be a sign on their own or be a part of a larger sign. Churches, schools, and other public buildings as well as businesses often use this type of signage.

The biggest drawback is having to change the message during inclement weather, especially during the winter.

For this reason, many organizations are updating to an electronic or digital version that can be easily adjusted from a computer.

Window Lettering and Graphics: Ideal for Maximizing Marketing Space

Window graphics are a great way to use empty window space for advertising

Window lettering and graphics are a great form of advertising that can complement and supplement your main signage on the outside of your building.

This type of signage is a great way to make the most of your window space. It can even keep your facility cooler in the summertime, as it will quite effectively block sunlight from your windows.

Vehicle Signage: Ideal for Mobile Marketing

Putting your message on your vehicle is a great way of mobile advertising

Vehicle graphics are an effective form of mobile advertising. As your vehicle travels around, you can reach a wide audience and educate them about your business and your product.

Vehicle signage can range from simply having your business name on the side of your vehicle, to an extremely eye-catching graphic that takes up a large portion of the body complete with contact information and slogans.

An a-frame is a lightweight, inexpensive form or signage

An a-frame sign, also known as a sandwich board, is one of the most inexpensive types of signs because they are so small.

They are highly portable and lightweight so they can be easily moved from location to location.

This makes them perfect for notifying people about wet, slippery flooring or placing outside of a restaurant on the sidewalk to display your daily specials.

Because of their small size, they are not very effective for attracting attention from a long distance away.

Digital Signage: Ideal for Maximum Effect and Engagement

Digital signage is eye-catching and interactive

Digital signage is a type of electronic signage that uses technologies like LCD, LED, projection, and e-paper to display digital images, video, web pages, text, etc. It is a very dynamic form of advertising, as it can be easily changed and updated.

Digital signage is eye-catching and versatile, as it is easy to update and refresh the images or videos it displays. It can also be interactive, so it is informative and will also be a way to keep your customers happy and occupied if they have to wait in line.
