A pylon sign is freestanding and supported by one or two poles.

1. What Is a Pylon Sign?

A pylon sign is a freestanding sign that is usually supported by either one or two poles. They are commonly made with an aluminum or steel frame with a rigid or flexible face.

They can display your message on either one or both sides. Often pylon signs are illuminated or backlit with LED or fluorescent lamps, however, they also can be left without illumination.

Pylon signs are often illuminated.

2. Common Names for Pylon Signs

Pylon is the technical term for this type of signage, however, they are often referred to by different names including road signs, highway signs, freestanding signs, pole signs, or just “signage.”

No matter what you call it, a pylon sign is a great way to catch the attention of passing traffic.

3. Why a Pylon Sign Is a Good Choice for Your Business

There are many great benefits to installing a pylon sign for your business, including:

Visibility:

Because of its sheer height, pylon signs can be seen from a great distance, making them a wonderful advertisement for your business and a great tool for grabbing peoples' attention.

A pylon sign can give your business great visibility.

Attractiveness:

The large size of a pylon sign makes it a great canvas for beautifully portraying your company's message. Because they tend to be larger, you could find that you may have extra space to showcase images, logos and text without having to cram your design together.

Location:

A pylon sign can be placed where it will attract the most attention. If your actual building is difficult to see, then simply having a storefront sign won't give you the best exposure. Installing a pylon sign along the road will give your business the extra attention it needs to attract even more customers.

4. When To choose a pylon sign

A pylon sign is an excellent choice:

  • If your business is set back from a main road

  • If your parking lot is in front of your building

  • If you want to clearly mark the entrance to your business

  • If your business is obstructed by something like another building, making it difficult for customers to find you

  • If you want to attract extra traffic coming off of a nearby highway

  • If your business is in an industrial area where there are great distances between plants and warehouses so that motorists can find you easier.

5. How a Pylon Sign Differs from a Monument Sign

Pylon and monument signs are very similar in that they are both located away from your main building and placed at the entrance to your property or along the road so that customers can find you more easily. The major difference between the two is that pylon signs are much higher.

Depending on the by-laws in your area, you may be restricted as to the height of a sign that you are allowed to put up. This could be a big factor in determining whether you choose a pylon or monument sign. Monument signs are usually about 5 feet high and are designed to display your message at eye level and to blend in nicely with your surrounding landscape.

If your business is in a mixed zoning area with residential homes, condo buildings, offices, and storefront businesses, then you might want to choose a monument sign so that your signage fits in better with the character of your neighbourhood.

A monument sign is usually about 5 feet high and blends in with your landscape.
