6 Types of Shop Signage for Your Business

1. Storefront Signage

Storefront signage is often the first thing that a potential customer notices about your business, that's why it's important to make sure that yours makes a great first impression.

An effective storefront sign will let your customer know what your business is called and clearly let them know what you do.

If your business name doesn’t clearly identify what type of business you are, then you can also incorporate images and logos into your shop signage to make it clear.

2. Pylons or Monuments

Pylon signs are shop signage that are built right into the ground and usually located away from your building, near the street. They have a visible support structure to keep them secured. Most pylon signs are at least 12 feet high, with some much higher, and they come in a wide variety of widths.

Monument signs are very similar to pylon signs except but they are not as high. A monument sign is usually no taller than about five feet tall. Its purpose is to display your message at eye level.

Pylon and monument signs play an important role in pointing people to the location of your business. They are especially important if your facility is set back or hidden from the road. Choose a design the complements your storefront signage to help to build brand recognition.

3. Vehicle Graphics

Vehicle graphics are an effective form of mobile advertising that can range from simply having your business name and contact information on the side of your vehicle, to an extremely eye-catching graphic that takes up a large portion of the body complete with contact information and slogans.

As you drive your vehicle around, you can be advertising your business to an even wider audience and you can be educating them about what you do.

4. Awnings

Custom awnings are a type of shop signage that can give added dimension to a flat wall and make your business facade look much more attractive and appealing to people passing by.

You can have them designed to complement your existing storefront signage and add an additional marketing piece to promote your brand.

Installing commercial awnings can be a great way to help you expand on your usable space. If you own a restaurant or cafe, you can use the square footage underneath the awning for additional seating during the more temperate times of the year.

Not only can they provide you with additional seating, but they can also provide protection for your guests from the sun, rain, and snow which can go a long way in building customer loyalty.

5. Interior Signs

You can choose from a wide variety of interior sign options for your business.

From small office signs to large murals and prints, wayfinding signs to directories, reception signs to social distancing signs, interior signs are an excellent way to add colour to your business and ensure customers know exactly who you are!

Installing interior signs that coordinate with your exterior signage is another great way to build brand recognition.

6. Banners

Banners can be hung across or down the facade of your building, across a road or parking lot or inside your building. They can be horizontal or vertically aligned and they can also be freestanding with their own stand.

Banners are an effective short-term form of shop signage that can be used to announce upcoming events, such as grand openings or trade shows. They are usually very big and eye-catching and can be used both indoors and outdoors.

7. Tips for Making Your Shop Signage Effective

Tip A): Keep Your Shop Signage Simple

Don't be tempted to go overboard with your shop signage; you want to keep it simple. Don't overcrowd your space with too much text that takes too long to read or too many images that will confuse the viewer.

You need to have enough "white space" around your design elements to give the design an overall appealing look. If your sign is too wordy, then people will avoid reading it.

Tip B): Make Your Shop Signage Easy to See and Read

The whole idea behind putting up shop signage is so that people will be able to read it. Make sure that the design that you choose is very easy to read. If you want it read from large distances, then you need to make it big enough to be seen.

The USSC Foundation has developed a Standard Legibility Index that will help you determine how big your letters need to be for the distance that you want them be be read from.

The legibility index will show you how far away your sign can be read for every 1 inch of your capital letter font.

For example, if your sign has a legibility index of 26, then it means that it should be legible from 26 feet away with one inch capital letters. If your capital letters are 10 inches, then your sign should be legible from 260 feet away.

The size of your lettering will determine how far away your shop signage can be read.

Tip C): Make Your Design Eye-Catching

Adding attractive images or logos can make your shop signage more appealing and they can also help to tell passersby what your business is about and help to promote your brand.

If you want your shop signage to stand out and catch the attention of potential customers, choose colours that will evoke the right kind of emotions or feelings.

For example red and yellows are good choices for fast food restaurants as they tend to excite and make people feel hungry while blue is a good colour for a bank or other financial institution as it evokes a feeling of tradition and trust.

Tip D): Choose High Quality Materials

Using better quality materials will make your shop signage look more professional and will help you portray a higher class image for your business.

In addition, business signs can be a rather significant investment so it is a good idea to choose a company that will make your sign from high quality materials that will last.
